St. Helena Star on August 5, 1898

Death of R. W. Lemme – Aug. 5th, 1898

Passed Away at His Home Below Town Wednesday Night.

It is with the deepest sorrow that we record the death of Rudolph W. Lemme, which sad event occurred at his home below town, Wednesday evening, at 11 o’clock. Mr. Lemme was taken ill over three weeks ago, while in San Francisco, and immediately came to his home in St. Helena, where he continually grew worse until the end came.

Rudolph Washington Lemme was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on Feb. 22, 1857, and was, therefore, at the time of his death, only 41 years of age. When four years old he came to California with his parents and settled in San Francisco, where he received his education. In 1875 the family purchased a ranch on Spring mountain, which became their permanent home. In 1883 Mr. Lemme was united in marriage to Miss Alice McPike, daughter of the late John McPike. He leaves also a mother and three children – Charley, aged 15, John, aged 13, and Alice, aged 8.

Deceased had for many years been actively engaged in grape culture and winemaking on an extensive scale near St. Helena and was one of the promoters of the California Wine Corporation. He believed most firmly in its ability to advance the interests of the wine producers of the state as distinguished from the wine dealers. For over a year he had been apperintendent of cellars for the wine makers’ corporation at San Francisco.

For some time past he had given much of his time to the practical operation of the corporation in San Francisco. It was while so engaged that he was subjected to what he thought was a slight attack of indigestion, but it proved a much more serious matter. His heart became involved and its accelerated motion baffled the efforts of his physician.

Mr. Lemme had always, prior to his last illness, enjoyed the best of health. He was in the prime of manhood, large, robust in frame, and his untimely death has proved to be a great shock to his family and friends. The funeral services were held at the family residence, near Crane station, this afternoon, at 1:30 o’clock. The remains will be taken to the Old Fellows’ cemetery, San Francisco, tomorrow morning and will be cremated at the hour of 12 o’clock.
