San Francisco Chronicle, June 20, 1992

Barbara Hall Schilling, a community leader and co-founder of one of the nation’s first management support groups for nonprofit agencies, died of cancer Wednesday at her home in Atherton. She was 60.

Mrs. Schilling, a member of the family that made its name in the spice business, helped found The Management Center in San Francisco, which provided training in business management skills for nonprofit organizations in order to help them conduct business more efficiently. Today, there are more than 50 such centers in the country.

A native of Pawtucket, R.I., and a graduate of Wellesley College, Mrs. Schilling was also a well-known author of business and management guides through the maze of government nonprofit legislation.

She also belonged to numerous local and national nonprofit organizations and served as a national board member of the Girls Club of America.

Mrs. Schilling is survived by her husband, Alexander H. Schilling of Atherton; her mother, Mrs. Joseph E. Hall of Portola Valley; her two sons, Alexander H. Schilling Jr. of San Francisco and Robert E. Schilling of Menlo Park and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 24 at 2 p.m. at the Valley Presbyterian Church in Portola Valley at 945 Portola Road.
